EH&S Analysis of Dye-Sensitized Photovoltaic Solar Cell Production

Abstract

Photovoltaic solar cells based on a dye-sensitized nanocrystalline titanium dioxide photoelectrode have been researched and reported since the early 1990’s.  Commercial production of dye-sensitized photovoltaic solar cells has recently been reported in Australia.  In this report, current manufacturing alternatives are described, and estimates are made of annual chemical use and emissions during production.  Environmental, health and safety considerations for handling these materials are discussed.  This preliminary ES&H evaluation of dye-sensitized titanium dioxide solar cells indicates that some precautions will be necessary to mitigate hazards that could result in worker exposure.  Additional information is being pursued for a more complete assessment.
